Installation

EAESCrypt does not use a standard Windows installation package. Instead, it has scripts that just copies the executable files to a folder on the system and change the Windows registry so that the context menus call these executables.

It means that you can install EAESCrypt in any computer that you have access, even if you don't have administrative permissions.

All the files required for the installation of EAESCrypt are stored within a ZIP file archive.

Installing EAESCrypt

To install EAECrypt, unzip the installation package and double-click the file "install.bat". This will open a console window showing the installation progress. When the installation is complete, press ENTER to close the console.

The executable files of EAESCrypt, as well as some supporting files, are stored within the folder "EAESCrypt" of the folder pointed by the environment variable "LOCALAPPDATA". To see which folder is this, follow these steps:

  • Open a command console window:
    • From the Start menu, select "Run..."
    • Type cmd and click "OK"
  • In the command window, type the command
    set
    and press ENTER
  • Search, in the returned text, for the sequence LOCALAPPDATA=
After this sequence, the path that contains the subfolder "EAESCrypt" will be displayed.

EAESCrypt is installed within the scope of your own user. This means that if your computer supports logins from different users, each one will have to make its own installation of EAESCrypt.

Installing the Compatibility Package

EAESCrypt version 2.01 is not compatible with files generated by versions previous to 2.00. To restore files encrypted by versions previous to 2.00, EAESCrypt includes a Compatibility Package.

This package inserts a new command in the context menu of the encrypted files (with the suffix ".eaes") that runs the decryption in the older version of EAESCrypt. To install the Compatibity Package, unzip the installation package and double-click the file "install_compatibility.bat". This will open a console window showing the installation progress. When the installation is complete, press ENTER to close the console.

After this package is installed, the context menu of the ".eaes" files includes the option "Compatibility pack : Decrypt with older version". Refer to the section Encrypt and Decrypt files and folders for more information about decrypting files with older versions.

Uninstalling the Compatibility Package

To uninstall the Compatibility Package, unzip the installation package and double-click the file "uninstall_compatibility.bat". The function to decrypt files with older versions is removed, but EAESCrypt 2.01 remains installed.

Uninstalling EAESCrypt

To uninstall EAESCrypt, unzip the installation package and double-click the file "uninstall.bat". All the files and references to EAESCrypt, including the Conversion Package, will be removed, with the exception of the Keys Database files.
