Smart Grid is not about metering and automation. It goes beyond
technology and communications. Smart Grid is a complete paradigm
shift of the electrical networks operation for the utilities.
In traditional operating systems, information about the events are related
to the power grid and made available to the operators.
In this model, the information systems of the utility use the grid to perform
their functionalities.
In a Smart Grid system there is no distinction between the electrical system
and the information system. The grid itself becomes the main information
system of the utility.
The events take place in the grid that analyzes the incident and take the
decisions to maintain the network operating.
In this model the electric base is no longer a provider of information for
the operation and becomes an active system that returns the decisions taken
to other supporting systems.
